Jon Brion & Deanna Storey :: Little Person
My appreciation for Jon Brion grows immensely after listening to this song over and over again. The composition and chord changes are chilling but yet beautiful like The Carpenters beautiful. My favorite part, which I believe characterizes the overall song, is the melody starting at 42seconds. Then the whole song speeds up in tempo (double-time) and then at 3:01 back to the original tempo with the contagious melody as mentioned above (the transition makes it seem like it’s half-time).
But it only gets better. The lyrics and mood really tie this song into something special. The choice of words are simple and easy to grasp. One can close their eyes and freely interpret how they wish. What originally hooked me to this song was it’s perfect placement and alignment in Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York. Absolutely fitting for the characters and plot.
Thank you Jon Brion’s parents. Your baby boy creates beautiful music.
p.s: I just realized that the tumblr audio player doesn’t have a time stamp. So here’s a youtube link if interested. The syncing with this post is close but off by a second of two.
